What is Liquid Biopsy?
A liquid biopsy is a simple and non-invasive alternative to surgical biopsies which enable doctors to obtain information about a tumor through a simple blood draw. The information obtained from the blood draw including circulating tumor cells can provide valuable information for cancer patient diagnosis and prognosis.
Why Liquid Biopsy?
Cancer is a genetic disease characterized by high heterogeneity within a tumor. Therefore, the current gold standard of cancer diagnostics using a primary tumor biopsy may not be reflective of the disease condition. In addition, the surgical procedure is highly invasive and require patient tumor accessibility which may not be feasible in all patients.
Liquid biopsy enables the capture of cancer heterogeneity in a patient, providing more holistic information about the disease. This potentially enables the real-time monitoring of cancer dynamics which can be particularly useful for cancer patient status monitoring and treatment response through periodic patient blood draws.
